Cathay Cargo
About Cathay Cargo
From its origins as a small regional freight operator established in 1946, Cathay Pacific Airways has grown to become one of the world’s leading combination cargo carriers and has helped to build Hong Kong into the world’s busiest air cargo hub. All of Cathay Pacific’s’ cargo operations are grouped under its Cargo unit.
In 2023, Cathay announced the rebrand of its cargo business to Cathay Cargo. The change aligns with the airline’s overarching brand redesign, and reinforces the existing strong brand association and perceptions held by its customers. The rebrand will connect Cathay Cargo to the master Cathay brand – a premium travel lifestyle brand offering a range of products and services that create more value for customers and partners.
Cathay’s cargo fleet
Cathay Cargo currently operates a fleet of 20 Boeing 747 freighters: six 747-400ERFs (Extended Range Freighter) and 14 747-8F freighters. Cathay Cargo also uses cargo space on the Cathay Group’s 181 passenger aircraft. In 2022, Cathay Cargo carried more than 1,154,000 tonnes of cargo.
Cathay Cargo has developed a wide range of service options to meet the growing needs of its customers. On top of our expert general cargo handling, we offer a range of dedicated products for shipments that require special handling, including:
In 2021, we launched Click & Ship, a new digital booking platform, promising booking transparency and speed, day and night. Customers can view prices and capacity, and book cargo with instant confirmation in just three steps through the intuitive booking interface.
In 2022, we introduced a suite of Priority options, offering dedicated booking tiers of priority. Priority provides greater choice and better-defined service options to customers with speed, capacity and assurance for every shipment.
Cathay Cargo Terminal
Cathay Cargo Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) commenced operations on 21 February 2013. The HK$5.9 billion facility is one of the biggest and most sophisticated terminals in the world, providing additional air cargo handling capacity and facilities that help to further reinforce Hong Kong’s position as the world’s premier international airfreight hub.
The airline’s wholly owned subsidiary, Cathay Pacific Services Ltd (CPSL), was awarded a franchise to invest in, design, construct and operate the new air cargo terminal at HKIA under a 20-year agreement. The new terminal has been designed for an annual air cargo throughput capacity of 2.6 million tonnes and a common-use facility open to all airline customers.
The Cathay Cargo Terminal sets new standards in operational efficiency, environmental design and service levels.
