Embargo List for Live Animals

1) Animals intended for laboratory, experiment, research and testing purposes

2) Greyhounds for dog racing purpose

3) Korean squirrel and skunk

4) Shipments declared as “Hunting Trophy”, “Animal Trophy”, “Mounted Trophy” or “Country specific (e.g. Africa) Trophy”

5) All kinds of bird, whether wild-caught or captive-bred, with the following EXCEPTIONS:

  • Domestic birds, such as day-old live poultry, e.g. chicks, ducklings, turkey poults and racing pigeons;
  • Non-commercial personal pets (captive-bred birds) forwarded between individuals;
  • Birds being transported between legitimate scientific institutions including recognised zoological and ornithological gardens;
  • Birds being transported to a location for generic regeneration.  i.e. captive-bred birds transported to a location to be released into the wild.

7) Cetaceans (dolphins, whales and porpoises), wild-caught or captive-bred, that are transported for amusement or performance purposes will not be accepted for carriage

8) Ivory and ivory-related products

9) Rhino horn

10) Tiger pelts, bones

11) The following fighting breeds of dog:

  • American Pit Bull
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasiliero
  • Japanese Tosa

13) Due to the Brachycephalic (snub-nosed, short snout or flat face) breeds of dogs and cats are susceptible in increased risk of heat stroke and breathing problems when exposed to stress and extreme heat, Cathay Pacific Airways will, only under certain conditions, accept brachycephalic, snub-nosed or mixed breeds of snub-nosed animals when the “Breed” on the Health Certificate states the following:

Routes

The following routes* accept the transportation of brachycephalic breeds:

- Hong Kong to Melbourne

- Hong Kong to Singapore

*The routes from Hong Kong to London Heathrow and from London Heathrow to Hong Kong are temporarily unavailable for the carriage of brachycephalic breeds due to operation reasons until further notice.

Seasonality

To ensure the welfare of all animals, shipments can only be accepted from January to May and from October to December.

Pet travel experts

When moving or travelling with brachycephalic animals, customers are required to work with a pet travel agent, who will ensure they meet all conditions of travel. Please approach any pet agents listed on the International Pet And Animal Transportation Association website (IPATA Pet Shippers)  when arranging the transportation of a brachycephalic pet. 

Container requirement (IATA LAR CR 1)

  • Snub nosed breeds require 10 % larger container than standard container.
  • For animal welfare, only 1 snub nosed animal can be loaded in each container.

Please download and send the shipper's declaration letter to CX office after signed and attach one copy to Air Waybill for export use.
